Rallies to restore gun sanity

With signs reading “Books not bullets”, “When Will Our Lives matter more than NRA Cash?”, “What’s wrong with background checks if you’re innocent?”, “Thoughts and prayers aren’t enough anymore”,  and “People defending the 2nd Amendment seems awfully scared of teenagers armed only with the 1st”,  a melting pot of an estimated 1 million kids, parents and educators descended on Washington D.C. Saturday.

While Fox News and right wing groups were claiming the speakers were all paid actors, the Parkland students made a grand gesture  to not make the event just about them by including a wide range of speakers from around the country.   The movement leaders are fighting to keep the movement not turn into another moment by keeping the intensity high and making sure the empathy is not just about them but for all kids everywhere.

Along with the kids from Florida, 4 activists from Chicago spoke as did activists from D.C., Brooklyn and suburban Virginia.  All the speakers were moving, some to tears, and proved to the world they are serious and won’t stop until something is finally done.

60 Minutes interview with Stormy Daniels

Viewers were tormented a bit by the delay of the interview because of the NCAA regional final between Kansas and Duke, but the interview finally aired. In a long and complicated interview, Daniels laid out her case with style and grace, despite being bleeped for saying shit.

Anderson Cooper did not make it a puff piece slanted against Trump as he grilled his guest on some of the inconsistencies in her sorted tale.  Also talking to Daniel’s lawyer  Michael Avenatti. the case was

made Daniel’s was forced into signing the gagging contract, and also relating a story of her and her child’s safety being threatened in a Las Vegas parking lot.

So far Trump has sat on his Twitter thumbs and the question of does Daniels have any texts, emails, voicemail messages or videos remains a mystery.

Trump having problems lawyering up

Shortly before the announcement that newly hired attorney and regular Fox News host Joseph diGenova had beaten Scaramucii’s record for short tenure because of a conflict of interest, Trump tweeted ”

“Many lawyers and top law firms want to represent me in the Russia case … don’t believe the Fake News narrative that it is hard to find a lawyer who wants to take this on,” he wrote. “Fame & fortune will NEVER be turned down by a lawyer, though some are conflicted.”

This has left people scratching there heads as Trump is down to just one lawyer working full time on the special council investigation.  That would be Jay Sekulow, a conservative commentator who is known for his cases on religious freedom.  He’s reportedly in talks with other lawyers but who apparently are not all that hot for some of that Trump “fame and fortune”.  I’m sure it has nothing to do with Trump’s reputation for not paying people for services rendered.

  1. Thinking about what these kids are doing and how good, and maybe just a little bit lucky, they are to keep the intensity up and not hogging all the empathy. One thing for certain is they are going to make a stumble sooner or later especially with all the fake news the NRA supporters are throwing at them.

I believe they will overcome all that. I also believe there’s a wall they are going to definitely hit if they can keep the drive alive and that’s the filibuster. For sure many friends of the cause can get elected this year but it’s very doubtful they will get super majorities in both houses. The filibuster demon will keep legislation from making it to the floor and it will thanks to all those bright red little states with a combined population of squat. Minority rule will rule.

There is no easy path, but a constitutional amendment is more likely than legislation in D.C.. Change will come from the bottom if it comes at all. Given the vast majority of voters favoring sensible gun control, well fought battles in the states have a better chance of succeeding imho.

I don’t know how you promote a repeal, or repeal and replace of the 2A but there has to be a way to do it. Greater minds can prevail.

Don’t ask me, I’m just a blogger with free time on his hands.

  2. History Tells Us It’s a Bad Idea to Doubt These Children
The Parkland kids are marching in a proud tradition.

TThe varying types of conservative backlash to the March For Our Lives runs the gamut from the usual nyah-nyah-snowflakes to the Cold Dead Hands crowd, as Edroso ably points out in The Village Voice. (Rod Dreher, the famous civilian Benedictine, is particularly choice.) It also includes the very bizarre visual from the very bizarre Tomi Lahren, who sent out a photo of herself with a shootin ‘arn tucked in the front of her yoga pants, in violation of every common-sense safety rule regarding the use of both firearms and exercise clothes.

The more compassionate end of things was represented by Dr. Jonah Goldberg, the internationally famous psychologist and trauma specialist, who believes that the kids from Parkland are behaving in such an unruly fashion because of the possible psychological difficulties that he’s diagnosed via long-distance telepathy. He criticizes because he cares.
